It’s pastel color season once again and we’re pretty sure your wardrobe is already saturated with lots of bright and pastel-colored stuff just in time to celebrate the thawing of snow and brightening of the weather.
But in case you got bitten by the pastel bug too much, here are some tips on how to rein in on this trend and wear your pale colors without looking like an Easter egg painted by an overzealous kid.
1. Add metallic accents
Laura Whitmore, ELLE Style Awards held at One Embankment – Arrivals in London on January 18, 2014
Metallic clothes are often associated with glamor. They also inject a semblance of formality. If you are going to deck yourself in colorful clothes, go the extra mile and choose a metallic piece for one of your separates. Accessorize further with metallic-toned bags or shoes.
2. Incorporate prints
Lea Seydoux, Paris Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2014 – Miu Miu – Arrivals in Paris on March 5, 2014
Break off the pastel monotony and make sure you don’t look too washed out by adding a printed piece to your light-toned ensemble. A printed shirt will look great paired with pastel jackets and skirts.
3. Choose bright-colored accessories for pops of color
Katy Perry arrives in Narita International Airport in Tokyo on March 3, 2014
There’s nothing wrong with embracing colors, bright or in a feminine pastel shade. If you’re wearing a monochromatic pastel hue, try adding a brighter-toned accessory like Katy Perry’s bright orange bag to add more drama.
4. Go for a sexy silhouette
Bella Thorne, Cartoon Network’s Hall of Game Awards at The Barker Hangar – Arrivals in Los Angeles on February 15, 2014
We get it, you don’t want to lose your sexy image with a pastel ensemble. But you can still join in on the fun by wearing pastel pieces that will emphasize your figure. Think Bella Thorne’s pencil sheer overlay skirt and cropped bustier top.
5. A print on print look will keep your outfit interesting
Elle Fanning, Paris Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2014 – Miu Miu – Outside Arrivals in Paris on March 5, 2014
Choose the same print in two different pastel colors and wear them together. Like Elle Fanning, you can go the extra mile by wearing a pretty trench or dress coat to tie the look.
6. Wear a pastel skirt with neutral-hued top and outerwear
Daria Cimoroni, Paris Fashion Week Womenswear Fall/Winter 2014-2015 – Street Fashion – Day 8 in Paris on March 4, 2014
Beige, cream, grey and white will emphasize the pastel piece but will give your outfit a more polished and less juvenile vibe.
