Divergent leading lady Shailene Woodley arrived at the 2013 MTV Music Video Awards in a bright Emilio Pucci skirt, debuting a shockingly short do.

Dubbed by some as the next Jennifer Lawrence due to the inevitable comparison of her film to Hunger Games (much to the anger of fans who insist on the stark difference between the two storylines), it seems that the 21-year-old actress is planning on taking advantage of this career momentum.

Reps confirm that the shorter do is indeed for her new film The Fault in Our Stars, another film adaptation of a wildly popular novel.

“It’s awesome. The actual cut of it is very Midwestern, 15-year-old girl, or, I guess 17-year-old girl, which is the character I’m portraying,” the actress told MTV News when asked about her new locks. “It’s fun to embody this sort of energy for a while.”

Shailene also shares a liberation that came with needing to cut her hair, “I feel lighter. I also feel strong, especially when I’m able to cut it the way I want to cut it. I’m not nervous at all, so excited. I love it.” Shailene will be playing Hazel Grace Lancaster, who is the cancer-stricken protagonist of John Greene’s bestseller.

Shailene kept her hair slicked back while sporting a printed Emilio Pucci skirt with a black cropped top. The skirt may look like just-another-handkerchief-print piece, but upon closer inspection, delicate beading and two layers of graceful fringes adorn it.

Her look was capped off with pointed-toe black pumps from Casadei.
